About this project

Church Walk is a residential scheme designed by David Mikhail Architects, delivered with contractor Euro Build. MG Group produced the external balustrades, the sliding front doors and the facade elements, all in expanded aluminium mesh with an anodised bronze finish.

This is architectural metalwork where the metal is the finish. There is nowhere to hide a poor weld, an inconsistent mesh direction or a variation in the anodising, because the material is the visible face of the building.

What the work involved

  • Expanded aluminium mesh. Sheet that is slit and stretched to form a rigid open mesh, giving privacy and shading while keeping light and air moving through it.
  • Anodised bronze finish. Anodising builds the finish into the surface of the aluminium rather than sitting on top of it like a paint, so it wears far better in an exposed external position.
  • External balustrades. Guarding to the elevated areas, meeting the required heights and loadings.
  • Sliding front doors and facade panels. Moving elements and fixed facade detailed in the same material and finish, so the elevation reads as one piece.

Guarding compliance on a residential scheme

External balustrades on a dwelling are held to a higher guarding height than internal stairs and landings, and mesh infill has to be considered against the opening size rules where children may be present. Our guide sets out the guarding heights, the 100mm sphere rule and where horizontal rails should be avoided.
