About this project
MG Group was appointed by main contractor Gilbert Ash Ltd to fabricate and install multiple fire escape staircases for a Premier Inn hotel in Farringdon, London EC1A.
Escape stairs are a life safety element of a building, so this is work that sits where structural steel, building regulations and buildability meet.
What the work involved
- Multiple fire escape staircases. Fabricated as complete flights rather than assembled piecemeal on site, which keeps welding under factory control and reduces time working at height.
- Padstones. Load spreading pads that transfer the concentrated loads from the staircase supports safely into the supporting structure.
- Structural platform. The intermediate landing structure that ties the flights together and carries the change of direction.
- Stringers and folded treads. The stringers are the structural spine of each flight. Folded treads are formed from plate rather than built up from separate parts, giving a cleaner step with fewer welded joints to inspect and maintain.
Fabrication standards
Structural steelwork of this type is fabricated at our Berkhamsted works, which holds Factory Production Control certificate 2273-CPR-4271 from the Steel Construction Certification Scheme, covering load bearing and welded structural steel components up to EXC2. If you are specifying steel, our guide explains what EN 1090 certification actually means and what to ask a fabricator for.
