About this project

MG Group delivered the metalwork package for the treehouse spa pods at Chewton Glen Spa Hotel, on a design and build basis covering structural steel design, cladding and glass balustrades.

Elevated structures in a mature landscape setting are unforgiving: the steel has to carry the pods and their occupants, the cladding has to weather well in an exposed position, and the balustrades have to protect guests without spoiling the view that the building exists for.

What the work involved

  • Design and build. Single point responsibility from design through fabrication to installation, so the structure, the cladding and the balustrade are detailed to work together rather than coordinated across three suppliers.
  • Structural steel design. The supporting frame for elevated pods, designed for the imposed loads and the exposure of the location.
  • Cladding. The external envelope, detailed to suit the structure behind it.
  • Glass balustrade. Guarding that meets the required heights and loadings while keeping sightlines open.

A note on balustrade compliance

Guarding to elevated walkways and terraces has to meet the heights in Approved Document K and resist the loadings in BS EN 1991-1-1 and BS 6180, and glass changes how that is achieved rather than whether it applies. Our guide sets out the guarding heights, the 100mm sphere rule and the standards that govern barrier loadings.
